Surrounded by Jaguars, with nothing but light cover, what would you do? Should you just submit yourself to certain death? That's not going to happen. Most of us would fight. Try to take at least one more breath. So what could you do? Run? That's probably not a great idea either, jaguars are fast, humans are not as fast. It would probably also end with a less than pleasant mauling. Do you howl? Hope that a god exists and a savior will show up in their shining armor, and if you're really fortunate, they have a rifle. Do we fight back? If you're in the woods alone, I would hope you brought some sort of survival equipment. Maybe a knife, a lighter, some rope, a flair. Assuming we aren't as prepared as we should be could you defeat a Jaguar with no weapon other than a hunting knife? If a man can kill a bear with nothing but a hunting knife (Link) why could you not kill a Jaguar? He probably could. Though he's surrounded, and fending off one only delays the problem. It doesn't solve it. Do we follow the advice we've always been given about bears? Get big, and back away slowly; hope that you can intimidate the Jaguar and have it back away. Have it look for another meal. I have no idea what we could do in the face of a jaguar attack. Thankfully I don't see it happening to me. At least not in the near future. I hope.
Aside: Could you kill a bear with a hunting knife? if not what's the biggest (predatory) animal you could fend off? A raccoon? A badger? A Lynx? regardless i'm impressed.
Aside for the aside: Human vs. Bear hot dog eating contest "the bear doesn't know it's a competition"
Ahh...deep thoughts! So good to see your responses to the short stories. I really found the poem about Love an enjoyable read as you were able to effectively create mood and atmosphere. I perceived a distinct shift from the beginning through to the end of your poem as I was reading. Perhaps it was a shift in perspective. The final lines were particularly effective for this effect. Continue to write reflectively and thoughtfully in response to literature. Keep posting!
